So here it is, the obligatory New Years post. However, unlike many other new years post that are about setting goals (which I’m down with) this one is about simply changing the first 5-10 minutes of your morning in hopes of giving you a positive jump start. So here’s to you and here’s to a change in your morning routine in 2018.
Tell me the truth, do you ever wake up and your first thought is negative? Maybe it goes something like, “Ugh, another day of work” or “it’s so early, ughh”. If you do, it’s ok, I think it’s actually pretty common. But it being common is a great reason to start breaking the habit, I mean, who wants to be like everyone else? My first goal is to have your first thoughts be positive thoughts. Don’t complain about it being too cold or too hot. Don’t complain about another day of work. Wake up and speak positivity into your day. Instead of thinking to yourself, “ugh another day of work”, tell yourself, “I have the opportunity to go to work”. We need to understand that we can change how we feel simply by the words we speak. Just as words can hurt people when we speak negatively about them, they can boost not only them up, but they can boost us as well. Don’t use your tongue for negativity. Speak positivity into your life and the life of others.
Secondly, hydrate your body immediately after waking up. Before you give me the, “but I have to have my coffee first” talk, I don’t want to hear it. You can still have it, I am just asking that you put good old H20 into your system immediately after waking. You sweat at night while you sleep, a lot! It’s necessary for your body, if you want it to function at it’s highest level, that you give it what it needs most and what it needs is water. Lately I have added cucumber water to my morning routine. In the evening I cut up half of a cucumber and put it in a infuser bottle (I got it at target for about $10.) I put it in the refrigerator and it’s ready for me in the morning. Don’t want to infuse water? That’s fine. At the minimum, just drink a big glass of water in the morning, it doesn’t have to be infused with anything at all.
Last, and this is one I am working on in 2018, don’t let your phone be the first thing you look at in the morning. Try to not look at your phone for 15-20 minutes after waking up. Instead, use that time to tell yourself what you plan to accomplish during the day. Maybe you set goals for yourself, what steps will you take that day in order to get closer to that goal? Trust me when I tell you that your friends didn’t do anything between the time you went to bed and the time you woke up that you must see right away. Remember, things we see online may be entertaining, but in the long run, it’s not as important as you and the life you plan on creating. Spend more time creating your life than you do admiring only the highlights that others post online.
2018 can be an incredible year for you, but it starts with you making the small daily decisions to make it that way. Don’t rely on others, don’t make excuses. Just do the daily tasks to make yourself great. Once you do that, you will have the ability to raise those around you to the same level and expectations.
